Rice Americas 2010

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Rice Americas 2010 conference was held in Cartagena, Columbia, April 21-22. Hosted by The Rice Trader publication and the U.S. Rice Producers Association, this conference is quickly becoming the rice convention of the Americas as anticipated four years ago and is expected to grow in the years ahead. According to Dwight Roberts, president and CEO of the U.S. Rice Producers Association, “Our focus is on both the commercial and production aspects of the rice marketplace for the Western Hemisphere, and our plans to enlist the involvement of a steering committee from throughout the region will give us the necessary guidance for future success.”

Following are pictorial highlights from the event.

Seed variety developments for the future and the cost of food security related to the seed industry was a hot topic at the TRT Rice Americas 2010 as evidenced by a lengthy Q&A session that followed the presentations. Left to right are Jeremy Zwinger (The Rice Trader), Randy Ouzts (Horizon Ag), Ken Fearday (RiceTec), Mairson Santana (Agro Norte) and Edgar Torres (CIAT-FLAR).

South American rice millers Jose Manuel Suso (La Esmeralda, Jamundi Valle, Colombia), Oscar Zuluaga (Molino Federal, Tolima, Colombia), Guillermo Zub (Agrozafra S.A., Carmen, Paraguay) and Daniel Vera (Paragrain S.A., Asuncion, Paraguay) gather in the exhibit area during a coffee break.

Networking is just one of the great benefits of the conference. An impressive line-up of speakers and program topics, as well as several special receptions, also were of key interest to all participants.
