I think just about everyone in the ag world knows that when it comes to weed control, it’s best to “start clean and stay clean.” However, with the economic situation being as dire as it is, many growers are looking to cut costs in any way possible. My advice is to not get rid of our burndown and PRE applications. In Mississippi, most of our burndown herbicide applications are based on glyphosate or paraquat, with command continuing to tote the load for our PRE applications.

You can’t talk about weed control in rice without talking about barnyardgrass. It is our No. 1 issue in rice production in Mississippi. A few options besides Command come to mind for barnyardgrass control PRE, namely Prowl, or Facet + Bolero. POST options include the Provisia and MaxAce programs that have been around for a few years. We were able to look at Provisia applications with the 2-pass program of 15 fl oz fb 15 fl oz, and the 3-pass program of 11 oz fb 10 oz fb 10 oz. Specifically, we wanted to key in on the early post applications of both programs and apply those in cloudy and cooler temperatures. We did observe some injury with the early application of 15 oz when temperatures were below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. However, when conditions were above 65 degrees Fahrenheit, we saw no injury from either of the programs. For those targeting a March planting, keep an eye on the temperature and cloud cover in the days around your Provisia application, specifically when using the higher rate.

Another thing I have to point out for my row rice guys: the PRE applications in flooded rice are important, but in row rice, they are ESSENTIAL. We have been looking at herbicide programs in row rice here in Mississippi, and the thing I always stress is in ensuring the PRE applications and overlapping those residual herbicides. Command and Sharpen are our friends when it comes to early season barnyardgrass and palmer amaranth control. Their residual won’t hold forever and eventually, we will need to follow it with Loyant or Grandstand. I included some pictures from our trials to highlight how important those PRE applications are. God Bless and Hail State!   ∆
