The 2021 Horizon Ag Louisiana Field Day is back in person and better than ever, with the spotlight this year on new, high-performing Clearfield and Provisia varieties that are raising the bar for yield potential, weed management and disease resistance.

The field day will be held on Jun. 29 at Richard Farms located at 5632 Louisiana Highway 700, Kaplan, Louisiana. It begins with a field tour at 5 p.m. There will also be guest speakers and dinner for attendees.

“We’re excited that we get to see our customers and business partners across the region in person this summer after COVID-19 led to the cancellation of last year’s event,” said Dr. Tim Walker, Horizon Ag general manager. “The Louisiana Field Day is one of the highlights of our year, and we have some great things to show and talk about, including Clearfield variety CLL17 and Provisia variety PVL03.”

A Louisiana-bred Clearfield variety, CLL17, attracted tremendous interest in the Coastal region this season because of its potential for higher yields and milling premiums at a lower total production cost than comparable hybrids or conventional varieties. It has consistently outyielded CL153, the top-planted Louisiana variety in recent years in trials in the state, and has solid ratoon crop potential. Just as important for many farmers, it also offers outstanding resistance to blast and Cercospora.

PVL03, the newest variety for the Provisia Rice System, was only available for seed production in 2021 but should be in better supply for planting next season. PVL03 is a long-grain rice with very good yield potential, milling and grain appearance, along with blast resistance. The Provisia Rice System, with Provisia herbicide, is recognized as one of the most effective grass  management tools available for Southern rice today.

The Horizon Ag Louisiana Field Day is traditionally held the evening before the annual field day at the LSU AgCenter H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station at Crowley, Louisiana.
