James Rice Farms has opened a new rice mill in Prairie Ronde, La.
A partnership between Beth James and Rolando Sanchez, it processes the branded Prairie Ronde Rice, named after the area in which it is grown.
The facility, which will mill a single long-grain variety grown on the farm, also has a testing laboratory to ensure quality standards.
The operation decided to market direct to consumers because they need to know their food’s origin, according to a news release.
“As part of the constant desire to evolve, we wanted to develop our products to take them from our farm to the kitchen table,” James said in the release.
Sanchez recently was named “Farmer of the Year” by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
